heart. synapse. is a collaborative piece created by Larry Hope and Sandi Langham. Larry began the piece and Sandi finished. Their thoughts on the process, experience, and end product are below:
Larry: Looking at someone else's painting is fine, however, becoming part of someone else's painting is different than painting an empty canvas of your own. It's horrifying trying to think of what that person is saying or thinking. I will never try working on someone else's painting again.
Sandi: Receiving only a brief explanation from Larry about the meaning and symbolism of his piece left a world of opportunities for intensifying the piece around Larry's thoughts. He simply explained the left side was a heart being run over, and the right side was to be "windows" to his soul. I loved his ideas and was hoping to add to and intensify his vision for the piece. I added streaks of red to the left portion to intensify the defeated the heart and accented the right portion (the mind) with streaks of light symbolizing glimpses of "hope" to the mind. I knew Larry intended for the left side to be the heart, and with the idea of the heart's connection (or lack of sometimes, as we may feel), to the mind. I visually pictured neurons making electrical and chemical connections (or not making connections at times) between nerves and cells and how the same thing feels like it can happen between the heart and mind. If the heart hurts, the mind may feel dark; if the minds has glimpses of hope, the heart can love.
heart. synapse. is one of thirteen original collaborative pieces. For images of the full series, reference the previous post.
